Begin your trip at the Capitol Reef Visitor Center. Explore the Fruita Historic Orchards; depending on the season, you can pick fresh cherries, peaches, or apples. Stop at the Gifford Homestead for fresh pie. In the afternoon, drive the 8-mile Scenic Drive to Capitol Gorge and hike into the narrow wash to see pioneer registers carved on the walls.
Hike the Hickman Bridge Trail (1.8 miles, 400 ft elevation gain) to see a massive natural sandstone bridge. Afterward, challenge yourself on the Cassidy Arch Trail (3.4 miles, 670 ft elevation gain). This trail climbs steeply up the canyon wall, allowing you to stand directly on top of the massive arch.
Drive east along Highway 24 to view the ancient Fremont Culture petroglyphs carved into cliff faces. Hike to Goosenecks Overlook for a view of the canyon winding below, then watch the sunset over the red rocks from Sunset Point.
