Canyonlands is divided into three districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, and the Maze. This itinerary focuses on the easily accessible Island in the Sky and the spectacular Needles.
Start your morning before dawn at Mesa Arch. Arriving early rewards you with the sun rising directly through the arch, illuminating the underside in a brilliant orange glow. Next, drive to the Green River Overlook for a breathtaking view of the river canyon system. In the afternoon, hike the Upheaval Dome Trail (1.8 miles) to peer into a bizarre geologic crater.
Drive 2 hours south of Moab to The Needles. Hike the Chesler Park Loop Trail (6 miles to viewpoint, 11 miles full loop). This trail weaves through narrow sandstone slots, colored spire fields, and open desert grasslands. The elevation gain is moderate but the terrain is rugged, requiring sturdy boots.
Return to Island in the Sky to complete your trip. Walk the Grand View Point Trail (2 miles roundtrip along the canyon edge) for wide vistas of the white rim. Drive down to Moab for dinner and celebrate a completed desert excursion.
