Standard vehicle entrance fees for most national parks are $35, valid for 7 days. If you plan to visit three or more parks within 12 months, the **America the Beautiful Pass** ($80 annual) is highly recommended. Make sure to reserve campsite bookings and specific permits early at Recreation.gov.
Lassen is California's miniature Yellowstone. Hydrothermal features bubble throughout the park, all centered around the Lassen Peak plug dome.
Begin your trip at the south entrance. Visit the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, then walk the short paved trail to Sulphur Works to witness bubbling mud pots and venting steam fumaroles. In the afternoon, hike to Mill Creek Falls (3.8 miles) through pine forests.
Hike the boardwalk of Bumpass Hell (3 miles roundtrip), the park's largest geothermal basin. Hear the roar of steam vents and see brilliant turquoise boiling pools. In the afternoon, hike the strenuous Lassen Peak Trail (5 miles, 2,000 ft elevation gain) to stand on top of the active volcano dome (10,457 ft).
Drive north to Manzanita Lake. Walk the flat trail around the lake (1.5 miles) for classic views of Lassen Peak reflected in the water. For an extra adventure, hike the challenging Cinder Cone Trail (4 miles), climbing up loose volcanic ash to peer into the crater rim.
