Explore Kyoto
Wander through the serene streets of Kyoto, Japan's cultural heart, famous for its classical Buddhist temples, serene gardens, and traditional geisha districts.
About Travel to Kyoto
Kyoto is about two hours from Tokyo by shinkansen; Kansai International Airport also serves the region. Buses and trains cover the city and nearby Arashiyama and Fushimi; consider a one-day bus pass or cycling. Spring and autumn are spectacular but very busy—book accommodation and key temples early. Visit temples early in the day to avoid crowds, and reserve tea houses or kaiseki meals in advance. Gion and Higashiyama are best explored on foot. Allow time for quiet gardens, seasonal cuisine, and perhaps a day trip to Nara.
